Luang Prabang has not been the only name of this tiny, peaceful city. Inhabited for century upon century, this small, magical peninsula has been known through the eras by many official titles, often long and complex, and as is often the case in Asia, only a single element of the name might be retained. In its ancient past, Luang Prabang has been known as Muang Xua, Muang Souvannaphoum (“Land of Gold”), and Sisatanakhanahuta (translation from the Pali: “millions of elephants”).

Its ancient street plan intact, its classic Lao architecture unaltered, Luang Prabang has been classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
